i am (我是)

photo-1I didn’t really know what to put on this page coz I couldn’t quite figure out what people would/would not want to know about me. Chances are, if you’re here reading this, you probably know me well enough and none of this would come as a huge surprise to you.. But if you happened to stumble (and I use this word loosely) on my blog, I decided to write about the few things most people wouldn’t know about me.

  1. In winter, I sleep with a beanie over my head. I can’t help it. It’s winter. And I try not to use the heater because I always feel suffocated after an hour or two so both the socks and beanie help quite a bit with the cold.
  2. I might be a gadget geek but I actually hate technology. I hate how we’re so dependent on it and how our lives seemingly crumble when something decides to break down on us. Most of all, I hate the mobile phone even though I have the coolest one of them all.
  3. I stopped wanting to be a lawyer right about the time I turned 12 because that was when I knew I valued a social life much, much, much more than the discipline required in the following years to get the necessary marks to get into law. On the other hand, I developed a love for reading and writing. I now masquerade as a suit wearing corporate slave although all I want to do is write fiction. That said, I still enjoy my job because it requires me to write quite a bit.
  4. The people I admire most in life are those who can write, draw and cook. And not necessarily in that order.
  5. Most of my material possessions and clothes are black, but my favourite colour is actually orange.
  6. I love films, which isn’t a surprise to most people. I watch a lot of foreign and arthouse films in addition to the usual mainstream stuff. And I generally enjoy foreign language films a lot more because they are so very quirky. But I think what would surprise most people is that one of my favourite films is The Mighty Ducks. Yep, the one starring Emilio Estevez and the ice hockey playing kids. Never fails to make me laugh, that film.
  7. And while we’re on films, I might as well tell you that I dream of working for an independent film distributor some day in hopes that it will score me an invite to the Cannes Film Festival. I’m still dreaming but I’ll make this dream come true one day.
  8. I have an ongoing love affair with all things Spanish and all things from Hong Kong. My love affair with Hong Kong began one fateful night in 1997.  This love subsequently carried over into Cantopop and Hong Kong cinema which formed the basis of my Honours thesis.
  9. In the same vein, I fell in love with Spain some time in 2008 and am now enamoured with (almost) all things Spanish. I started my Spanish classes in early 2009 and am currently trudging my way through masculine and feminine verbs, formal and informal verbs and the mystery of verb conjugation that is still eluding me. I hope to live in Spain (or Hong Kong) one day.
  10. I work as a public relations professional, a profession that requires me to be extremely outgoing and to talk to people all day long but I’m actually rather introverted by nature.

And that’s me, folks.
